Start with the course

Note the subject, the year or level, and the exam board if there is one. “Chemistry” is a broad request; “GCSE chemistry, ready for the November mock” lets a tutor tell you quickly whether they can help.

What to look for in a profile

  • Experience with your level and course.
  • A clear description of how they teach, not only a list of subjects.
  • Reviews from students at a similar level.

Questions worth asking

  • How would you explain a topic my child finds difficult?
  • How do you use past papers and practice questions?
  • How will you tell me how my child is progressing?

Use the trial lesson

Watch whether the tutor asks what your child already knows, whether your child is talking rather than only listening, and whether the explanations are pitched at the right level. If it does not feel right, try another tutor. Fit matters.

Keep it working

Share a topic list or a recent test result before each lesson so time goes on the weakest areas.
