What native speakers offer
Natural pronunciation, everyday expressions, humour and cultural background are things learners cannot easily get from a book.
What you still need
Native speakers often struggle to explain why something is correct. Learn the basic grammar terms and practise giving simple explanations and examples.
Plan around the learner’s level
Use the CEFR levels to judge where your learner is, and speak a little above it, with support, so they stretch without getting lost.
Get feedback right
Correct the mistakes that matter for the learner’s goal, not every slip. Give the right form and ask them to try again.
Qualifications that help
A short teaching certificate such as TEFL, TESOL or CELTA teaches lesson planning and correction techniques. See our guide to the differences between them.
Be honest about your limits
If you are not a native speaker, say so and lead with your experience instead. Clear teaching matters more than your passport.
