Know your goal and level
Are you learning for travel, work, an exam or fun? Use the CEFR levels from A1 to C2 to describe where you are, even roughly.
Look for the right fit
Check that the tutor teaches your language at your level, and whether they have experience with your goal, such as exam preparation or business conversation.
Use the trial lesson
See how much you speak, how mistakes are corrected and whether the lesson feels clear and encouraging.
Agree a plan
Ask what you will be able to do in a month and how practice between lessons fits in.
Review after a few weeks
If you are speaking more, understanding more and feeling more confident, it is working. If not, talk to the tutor or try someone new.
