Language exams explained: IELTS, DELE, DELF, Goethe, JLPT and HSK

Each major language has recognised exams: IELTS and Cambridge exams for English, DELE for Spanish, DELF and DALF for French, Goethe for German, JLPT for Japanese and HSK for Chinese. Many report results against CEFR levels, so tutors can match preparation to a learner's target score or level.

Main exams by language

English: IELTS and the Cambridge English qualifications are widely recognised for study and work.
Spanish: DELE diplomas from the Instituto Cervantes, aligned to CEFR levels.
French: DELF and DALF diplomas, aligned to CEFR levels.
German: Goethe-Zertifikat exams, aligned to CEFR levels.
Japanese: the JLPT, with its own five levels.
Chinese: the HSK, with its own level structure.

Always check the requirement

Universities, employers and immigration systems each set their own accepted exams and minimum scores. Check the official source before a learner books.

Frequently asked questions

Which exam should my learner take?

It depends on the goal, such as university admission, immigration or work. Always check the exact requirement of the institution.

Do all exams use CEFR levels?

Many European exams do. Others, such as JLPT and HSK, have their own scales, which are often compared to CEFR only roughly.

Can a tutor help with exam preparation?

Yes. Familiarity with the format, timing and marking criteria is a big part of preparation, alongside general language practice.
